Piera Detassis was born in Trento and graduated in History and Criticism of Cinema with Giampiero Brunetta, presenting a thesis on the cinematic aesthetics of Galvano della Volpe. She continued her education in Paris with a scholarship in history and criticism of cinema. She made her debut in journalism in the 1980s, writing for L’Arena, L’Unità, Il Manifesto, and publications such as Cinema & Cinema, Positif, and Alfabeta.

From 1997 to 2019, he directed the monthly magazine Ciak, relaunching the Ciak d’Oro Award and promoting events related to the brand. For twenty years (1994–2014), he was a film critic for Panorama. He has held top positions in cultural institutions: head of film activities for the Municipality of Modena (1985–1988), artistic director of the Tavolara Film Festival (1990–2023), coordinator of Maestri alla Reggia in Caserta.

For the Rome Film Fest, she was the director of the Premiere section (2006–2008) and artistic director (2008–2011), President of the Cinema Foundation for Rome from 2015 to 2018. She collaborated with the Carla Fendi Foundation for Spoleto and curated international retrospectives, including 20 Italian Leading Ladies for Cinecittà.

Author of numerous volumes, including Sequenza Segreta (Feltrinelli), Alain Tanner (Il Castoro), Il cinema di Antonio Pietrangeli (Marsilio), and Caro Diario edited with Nanni Moretti. She worked on the restoration of Gruppo di famiglia in un interno by Visconti and curated the book Sophia, dedicated to Loren, for the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. In 2017, she created the series “Nel profondo dell’immagine” for the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.

Since 2019, she has been Editor at Large for Cinema & Entertainment at the Hearst Italia group. Since 2018, she has chaired the Italian Cinema Academy Foundation and led the David di Donatello Awards also as Artistic Director, introducing reforms that have strengthened the dialogue between the industry and creatives, particularly with innovative projects such as Becoming Maestre created in collaboration with Netflix. Among the awards received are the Premiolino, the Biagio Agnes, and the Sergio Amidei.
