Curriculum

Tiziana Catarci has been a Full Professor of Information Processing Systems at the Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering "Antonio Ruberti" of Sapienza University of Rome since November 2000, of which she has been the director since November 2018. From 2014 to 2020, she was the director of the Interuniversity Center on Cognitive Processing in Natural and Artificial Systems (ECONA) and from 2015 to 2018 of the Sapienza Design Research Center. From 2009 to 2014, she was the president of the InfoSapienza Center. From 2010 to 2014, she was the vice-rector for Infrastructure and Technologies of the same university. Additionally, from July 2015 to June 2017, she was the President of Kion S.p.A., a company within the CINECA group, of which she was a Board Member from 2011 to 2017.

Tiziana Catarci's research activity has focused since its early days in the fields of human-computer interaction and databases, particularly at the intersection between these two research areas. In recent years, she has been interested in ethics and Artificial Intelligence, and is also among the founding members of SIPEIA, the Italian Society for the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. On these topics, she has published over 200 articles in prestigious international journals and conferences and has written or edited more than 20 books.

In 2003 Tiziana Catarci won the IBM Eclipse Innovation Award for the SEAWER project. In 2014, she was the first female candidate for the position of Rector in the long history of La Sapienza University. In 2015, she received the honor of Commander of the Italian Republic. In 2016, she was invited to join the prestigious European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and also in 2016, she was one of the 100 researchers invited to participate in the "100 Women for Science" project - http://www.100esperte.it/ - sponsored by the Bracco Foundation. In 2017, she received the award from the Rita Levi Montalcini association for "the dissemination of scientific culture among young generations". Since June 2017, she has been the Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious ACM Journal of Data and Information Quality. In 2018, she was selected to be part of "InspiringFifty", https://italy.inspiringfifty.org/, 50 women who serve as role models in the world of technology, inspiring younger women (and men) as a reference point for their ambitions. In 2018, she was named a fellow of the EAI - European Alliance for Innovation.

Lastly, Tiziana Catarci is very active in the fight against gender disparities and in promoting STEM disciplines among female students through dedicated projects at both school and university levels, acting as a role model for various initiatives including "Inspiring Girls" (http://www.inspiring-girls.it/).
