Polarizations: information, opinions, and other demons in the infosphereWalter Quattrociocchi is a Full Professor at Sapienza University of Rome, where he directs the Center of Data Science and Complexity for Society (CDCS). His research interests range from data science to network science, from cognitive science to data-driven modeling of dynamic processes in complex systems. He has an extensive scientific production published in international peer-reviewed conferences and journals, including Nature and PNAS. His research on the spread of disinformation was included in the World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Report 2016 and 2017.
His work has received extensive coverage from international media, including Scientific American, New Scientist, The Economist, The Guardian, New York Times, Washington Post, Bloomberg, Fortune, Poynter, and The Atlantic.
He has published three books: “Misinformation. A Guide to the Society of Information and Credulity” (Franco Angeli), “Free to Believe. Information, Internet, and Post-Truth” (Codice Edizioni), and “Polarizations: Information, Opinions, and Other Demons of the Infosphere” (Franco Angeli).
In 2017, he coordinated the roundtable on Fake News and the Role of Universities and Research in the Fight Against Disinformation, chaired by the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hon. Laura Boldrini. In 2018, he was a scientific consultant for the Communications Regulatory Authority (AGCOM), and in 2020 he was part of the Task Force to combat online hate, established by the Minister for Innovation. Recently, he was one of the Principal Investigators of the IRIS research coalition (UK/G7), engaged in combating disinformation on vaccines and climate change.
In 2023, the United States Department of State selected him to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) on the topic of data-driven public policies.
Professor Quattrociocchi is regularly invited to deliver keynotes and guest lectures at major academic institutions and international organizations.
