Marinella Levi

Full Professor of Materials Science and Technology, CMIC Politecnico Milano

Curriculum

Graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1986, Marinella Levi obtained a PhD in Materials Engineering in 1990, joining the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering 'Giulio Natta' at the Polytechnic University of Milan. Currently, Marinella Levi is a Full Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering 'Giulio Natta' at the Polytechnic University of Milan.

Since 2000 Marinella Levi has been in charge of the Laboratory of Chemistry and Characterization of Innovative Polymeric Systems (ChIPLab) of the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering 'Giulio Natta', within which in the autumn of 2013 the activity of +LAB, the new 3D printing laboratory of the Politecnico di Milano, was initiated ( www.piulab.it ).

His current research interests are mainly focused on the design and characterization of micro and nanocomposite hybrid polymeric materials, surface functionalization, and more generally on sustainable materials and technologies, with a particular interest in research on new advanced polymeric materials to be used in new low-cost 3D printing technologies, for prototyping and production on a small scale of semi-finished products and goods, with particular attention to health-related issues and co-design with people with different abilities.

Marinella Levi has coordinated and continues to coordinate collaboration projects with numerous Italian and international companies, and has been the scientific responsible for research contracts with industrial groups such as Eni, Solvay, Versalis, Lyondellbasell, Benetton Group, Zucchi Group, STMicroelectronics, Alcantara, and Pirelli.

Marinella Levi is a co-author of over 150 print publications, including over 100 published in international journals, 10 patents, and six monographs dedicated to the relationship between Materials and Design.

Since 1997, Marinella Levi has been teaching within integrated courses and laboratories as a professor of Science and Technology of Materials, affiliating since 2001 with the Faculty (now School) of Design at the Polytechnic University of Milan. From 2001 onwards, Marinella Levi has been a supervisor for over 50 Master's theses (or second level) and Doctorates in Product Design, Design & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Materials Engineering.

Nato a Milano, 21 marzo 1st 1961; 1986: M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano; 1989: Ph.D. degree in Materials Engineering (Politecnico di Milano); since 1991 at Department of Chemistry, Material and Chemical Engineering “Giulio Natta” of Politecnico di Milano as: Senior Technician (1991); Assistant Professor (2000); Associate Professor in Material Science and Technology (2002), Full Professor in Material Science and Technology (2007). In 2015-17, she served as Deputy Head of the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering “Giulio Natta” of Politecnico di Milano.

She collaborates with various Italian and multinational companies (Eni, Versalis, Lyondellbasell, STMicroelectronics, Solvay Solexis, Alcantara, Pirelli, Benetton, Luxottica, among the most important), as well as numerous national and international research centers. She also serves as a reviewer for the Italian Ministry of University & Research and for many scientific journals in the field of Polymers Science and Technology. Since 2000, she has been the Coordinator of the Laboratory of Chemistry and Characterization of Innovative Polymers, and in 2013 she founded +LAB, the 3D printing laboratory at Politecnico di Milano.

Her current research topics are about sustainable materials and processes, innovative polymeric materials and printers for additive manufacturing, and polymers for energy. Since 1997 she has been a teacher for several courses in Materials Science and Technology at the Design School, and at the School of Industrial Engineering and Information (Politecnico di Milano).
