Degree in Mathematics and Diploma from the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. In the seventies, she was a CNR researcher in Pisa and for four years at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Stanford University directed by J. McCarthy. Full Professor, since 1982 she has been at Sapienza in Rome; since 1990 she has held the chair of Artificial Intelligence. She was Coordinator of the PhD program and President of the Computer Engineering area Council; from 2006 to 2010 she directed the Department of Computer and System Engineering Antonio Ruberti (now DIAG), from 2010 to 2013 she was Dean of the newly established Faculty of Information Engineering, Computer Science and Statistics.
Founder and first president of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence. She has coordinated many national projects, working groups, and networks of excellence of the European Union. Member of national and international evaluation and advisory committees, numerous editorial boards of international journals and book series.
She founded a research group in Artificial Intelligence; author of about 170 specialized publications, she conducted research on knowledge representation and automated reasoning. She applied techniques of Artificial Intelligence to the construction of intelligent systems; she conducted research on cognitive robotics and the application of planning techniques to cybersecurity problems. Fellow of the AAAI (1995) and the ECCAI, now EurAI (1999); D. W. Award from the IJCAI (2009). Honorary Doctorate from Linköping University - Sweden (2002); D. S. Award from ECCAI, now EurAI (2014); member of the European Academy of Arts and Sciences (2015).
