Conversation on AI: past, present, and futureEnrico Motta is a professor of Knowledge Technologies at the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) of the Open University, in the United Kingdom, where he leads the Intelligent Systems and Data Science research group. He graduated in Computer Science from the University of Pisa and earned a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the Open University. From 2000 to 2007, he was the director of KMi.
His scientific activity includes ontologies, the semantic web, data science, intelligent systems, human-computer interaction, and the integration of large language models with the explicit and formal representation of knowledge and with reasoning models based on common sense. Recent applications include the analysis of scientific production, cognitive robotics, and the analysis of how the media represent political debate.
During his career, Professor Motta has led dozens of important research projects, for example MK:Smart, a £17 million "smart city" initiative that brought together 21 organizations to promote sustainable urban growth in the city of Milton Keynes.
He has been a member of evaluation committees and/or research consultant for programs and national initiatives in various countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, China, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Norway, and Estonia, as well as chair of the computer science panel in the “Starting Grant” program of the European Research Council.
