Curriculum

Despina Fragouli is involved in applied research at the Smart Materials laboratory of the Italian Institute of Technology. Her research focuses on the development of functional, innovative, and sustainable materials aimed at improving and safeguarding water quality, and combating the global water crisis. By modifying and engineering natural materials that are easily degradable or compostable, Despina Fragouli aims to achieve highly efficient and easily replicable systems. These systems operate thanks to energy from renewable sources and have minimal impact on the environment. Fragouli has published over 100 publications in international scientific journals, several book chapters, and is the author of 6 patents. She graduated in Physics from the University of Crete, specializing in Atomic Molecular and Laser Physics, then completed a Master's in Applied Molecular Spectroscopy and obtained a Ph.D. in Chemistry.
