He graduated in Biological Sciences from the University of Milan in 1979.

After a period of training in Strasbourg (1981-1982), she became a researcher at the Mario Negri Institute of Pharmacological Research in Bergamo (1983), where she now serves as Head of the Department of Molecular Medicine. Since 1991, she has been the Scientific Secretary of Negri Bergamo (now Astori Center) and the Clinical Research Center for Rare Diseases "Aldo and Cele Daccò" at the Mario Negri Institute. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Maastricht.

He has been part of the editorial boards of scientific journals: Journal of Nephrology (1996-1998); Kidney International (2003-2005); International Journal of Artificial Organs (since 2010).

The research interest concerns the regeneration of the kidney damaged by a chronic disease with the help of stem cells or drugs that stimulate resident renal progenitors. The scientific activity also involves gene therapy, used in transplantation as an anti-rejection strategy for solid organ transplants and in the treatment of rare genetic diseases.

Doctor Benigni has given numerous invited lectures at national and international congresses, and is the author of 210 publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
