5 rules to successfully face job interviews

A virtual meeting with 100 young female graduates on the topics of access to the world of work marks the partnership between Kelly Italy and the Women and Technologies Association

Milan, May 19, 2021 - How to face the world of work "only" with a degree in hand? How to overcome the barrier of lack of experience, inevitable for recent graduates? What are the rules to enhance knowledge, transversal skills, specialization courses in an interview? Today, these and other questions were answered by Kelly Services Italy , a leading workforce solutions provider in the reference market, in an online meeting organized together with Women&Tech® - Association of Women and Technologies .

Over 100 participants involved from all over Italy, mostly recent graduates in STEM disciplines, who interacted through the Women&Tech® Young Ambassadors with Cristian Sala , CEO of Kelly Services Italy and Clara Bez , HR Director of the company.

The talk event, titled "Wanted recent graduate...with experience!", inaugurates the partnership that Kelly Services Italy has signed with Women&Tech® - Association of Women and Technologies. A collaboration that Kelly wanted to start in line with its multi-year Equity@Work program, a tool to promote a culture of inclusivity, particularly for women, within and outside companies.

“In Kelly the concept of equity at work is not just a theory but a daily practice” - states Cristian Sala - “I have always firmly believed that the contribution of women, in every professional field, is fundamental and essential for a healthy and productive advancement of the country's system. I am therefore particularly pleased to start our collaboration with Women&Tech and to be able to share our deep knowledge of work, to provide a concrete contribution to the development of the career ambitions of the young women of the Association they represent, especially in the technical-scientific field, an important portion of the current and future female workforce in Italy.”

The meeting was opened by Gianna Martinengo, founder and President of Women&Tech®, CEO of DKTS, Digital Knowledge Technologies Services and Member of INAB STOA (European Parliament), and by Sabina Passamonti, Biochemist, head of the Molecular Nutrition research group at the University of Trieste, expert Member of the European Food Safety Authority, Associate of Women&Tech®.

"In the future, many professions will necessarily disappear." - comments Gianna Martinengo - "but just as many will emerge through new scenarios. It is about improving the quality of new jobs, anticipating their needs, and preparing the ground, especially by adapting the cultural, regulatory, economic, and social context. That is why we are happy to welcome Kelly Services Italy among our partners: their privileged observatory on the world of work represents a valuable contribution to guiding young people towards the professions of the future, a theme that has been in WomenTech's DNA since 2008."

5 SIMPLE RULES TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR JOB INTERVIEW

During the discussion with the young recent graduates, responding to their questions on how to approach professional selection opportunities, Cristian Sala and Clara Bez provided participants with some simple but often overlooked rules to succeed in presenting themselves in the best way during job interviews, preparing in advance and with the right tools.

  • Creating a LinkedIn Profile: Global recruiters use the professional social network daily to identify the profiles required by companies. Maintaining an active profile on this platform from the last years of university not only allows the candidate to describe their area of specialization but also to highlight the cross-cutting skills that are more difficult to showcase in a resume. For example, projects carried out in teams, internships, or volunteer experiences.
  • Collecting information about the company: It is always good to arrive at the interview knowing in detail the reality to which you are presenting yourself. This allows you to adapt to the context and present yourself prepared on the objectives and strengths that you want to propose to the interlocutor.
  • Being punctual : it may seem trivial, but often the fact that showing up for the interview at the scheduled time is not considered important enough. Being on time is not only a sign of courtesy, but also of seriousness and reliability, qualities that are certainly important for the interviewer.
  • Listen and focus on the questions : During the interview, it is important to talk about yourself but it is equally important to listen carefully to the questions of the interviewer, in order to respond promptly and thus enhance your strengths. Never show haste in responding or as a general attitude, which could be interpreted as disinterest.
  • Attention to comments : Avoid expressing negative judgments on study or work environments that you have previously come into contact with. Highlighting the formative factors of different experienced situations helps the interlocutor form a proactive image of us.

VALORIZING THE YOUNG WORKFORCE: IT REQUIRES CONCRETE HELP BUT ALSO A CULTURAL SHIFT

In the world there are 5.7 billion people who make up the workforce. Of these, 24% belong to Gen Z (between 15 and 24 years old) but only 36% of them have a paid job. True digital natives, Gen Z presents itself as the most diverse, better educated, and more tech-savvy workforce generation. Professionally, they aspire to be part of open, inclusive, and dynamic teams, and work situations where flexibility, both their own and others', is a distinctive trait. For these young people, efficiency is not measured by being in the office from 9 to 5, and the pandemic has strengthened this belief.

Such openness and willingness of young people, however, in our country often the labor market poses barriers to entry, sometimes paradoxical.

“In my experience as a manager of academic research funded solely by external funds, the determination of young women in studies and practical internships reveals their great ability to embrace work goals given - says Sabina Passamonti of Women&Tech® - Companies should consider their INexperience as a great opportunity to have in their ranks people capable of quickly adapting to the company's style: a first love that cannot be wasted.” .

"At their first entry into the world of work, today's girls and boys are often disoriented - add Clara Bez , HR Director of Kelly Services Italy - Often rich in past experiences and with a varied baggage of interests and knowledge, on one hand they are unable to valorize them within the curriculum, but at the same time they are often unprepared in understanding the expectations of companies. Therefore, a cultural change is necessary that, through targeted interventions, supports today's young workforce and, increasingly, tomorrow's workforce, in valuing their own talent and training, and enables them to respond to market needs."
