In a world that seems to be rushing towards achieving equal opportunities in all fields, especially in the professional one, we often still hear that scientific subjects and professions continue to be male-dominated areas. This is also confirmed by the recent study promoted by the National Research Program PNR-60 Gender Equality, according to which, in Switzerland, but not only, there is still a very deep gender gap in the choice of studies, training, and professional careers by men and women. Yet the technological and scientific development of recent decades, role models such as astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti and physicist Fabiola Gianotti, director of CERN, teach us that science, as well as mathematics, engineering, and technology, can and must also be for women. The Club Business Professional Women Ticino is deeply convinced of this and, in collaboration with Expo Women Global Forum, organized a debate on October 7, 2015 to discuss the relationship between women and science, the perspectives, and future strategies to promote a female scientific reality, entitled:
The future is STEAM for women too (and especially!)
Developed in partnership with SVIN-Swiss Association of Women Engineers and CFA Society Italy, the event was held in the prestigious setting of the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan and saw the participation of prominent international speakers from the scientific and financial fields who have always been active in promoting an inclusive and gender-equal professional culture. Made possible by the commitment and dedication to the project of the President of BPW Club Ticino Marialuisa Parodi in collaboration with Natascha Fioretti as the moderator, the event was attended by:
Valerie Guertler-Doyle, Founder of Diversity in Business and former Director of Diversity & Inclusion at Novartis Switzerland, Viv Burr from Huddersfield University, researcher and expert in gender psychology, Lucia Martinelli, Research Director at MUSE - Museum of Science in Trento and member of the "Women and Science" association as well as the European Platform of Women Scientists, Marcella Carollo, Professor of Astrophysics at the Department of Physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Anna Gamba, CFA, Fund Manager and Senior Analyst at Pairstech Capital Management LLP, Board Member of CFA Society Italy, and Elisabeth Bosshart, President of BPW Switzerland, owner of Bosshart Consulting GmbH.
In this video, which aims to be a memory and testimony of the Milanese event, some of them share their vision explaining why the future is STEAM, especially for women.
